What to visit in Formentera: Sant Francesc Xavier

When one thinks of Formentera, images of paradisiacal beaches, turquoise waters and muscled Italians come directly to mind. But I assure you that on this little island there is much, much more.

Take, for example, its small villages, which have a unique essence and special places which not all tourists discover.

The village of Sant Francesc, with about 4000 inhabitants, is the most populated of the island. And its capital, since all the institutional buildings can be found in its main square.

What to do in Sant Francesc during the day?

A walk through its streets to discover its beautiful small shops, most of them decorated with a special charm and care. With small details that will invite you to go in and get a souvenir, even a photograph.

In the church square, you will find several bars where you can have breakfast or lunch to start the day full of energy. And every summer day (except Sundays) they set up a market during the morning. A perfect place to contemplate the life of Formentera and its people.

Something very special to do in Sant Francesc Xavier is to visit the mills in the area: the Molí d’en Jeroni and the Molí d’en Mateu. The first of them is located on the top of a hill, so with the visit you also get some beautiful views of the port of La Savina and the lake.

What to do in Sant Francesc at night?

Enjoy good music and let them surprise your taste buds and take care of you, in one of the bars and restaurants of the village. Can Carlos, Cana Joana or Il Gioviale are some of the favourites of the residents.

In the church square, Saturday nights dress up to jazz. After 10 pm you can enjoy performances of the best live jazz on the island.

And continuing with live music, there is a place with a lot of magic, Fonda Platé, where, with luck, you can enjoy live concerts of some of the local groups.

Sant Francesc has a bustling life throughout the year, but it is in the summer months when it brings out its full potential. Also, being located in the centre of the island, and having all kinds of services and supermarkets, makes it a very good option for you to stay in Formentera.

Come and live Sant Francesc!
