Formentera and its curiosities

Formentera is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. Thanks to its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, it attracts thousands of visitors every year. In addition to its natural beauty, our island also hides some interesting curiosities, which we’ll tell you about!

Tiny size

Although it is part of the Balearic archipelago, Formentera is the smallest island of this group. With a surface area of just 83 square kilometres, it is possible to cycle from one end to the other in just a few hours.

Idyllic beaches

Formentera is famous for its unspoilt beaches and preserved natural environment. The absence of large tourist complexes and massive buildings has made it possible to maintain a peaceful atmosphere and preserve the natural beauty.

The island of the hippies

During the 1960s, Formentera became a popular destination for hippies seeking an alternative lifestyle in contact with nature. Nowadays, you can find hippie communities that have decided to settle on the island.

La Mola Lighthouse

The La Mola lighthouse (1861), located on the eastern end of the island, is one of the most emblematic places on Formentera with breathtaking views of the sea and the cliffs. Every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon a craft market with local products takes place in La Mola.

Posidonia oceanica

The waters around Formentera host a meadow of Posidonia oceanica, a marine plant protected and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This plant is essential for the marine ecosystem and contributes to maintain the transparency and quality of the waters.

Ses Salines

To the south of Formentera is the Ses Salines Natural Park, a protected area of great ecological value. Here you can find salt flats, lagoons and a wide variety of migratory birds. In fact, the park extends all the way to the neighbouring island of Ibiza, creating a unique ecosystem.

Es Vedrà

Although not located on Formentera, the mysterious island of Es Vedrà is visible from parts of Fomentera on clear days. This rugged, uninhabited rock is believed to have magnetic properties and has been associated with paranormal phenomena and UFO sightings.
